Fraud, Waste & Abuse Training

Fraud, Waste & Abuse deals with compliance, billing and other related issues. What you need to know is:

  • - that the government enforces several laws and rules in this area with penalties including fines and/or imprisonment;
  • - that the government now requires training for participants in any Medicare Advantage plan;
  • - that some state rules require training for all physicians and
  • - the definitions and rules governing fraud and abuse, anti-kickback statutes and the Stark law.
Seven Elements of a Compliance Program
  1. Implementing compliance and practice standards;
  2. Designating a compliance officer or contact;
  3. Conducting appropriate training and education;
  4. Conducting internal monitoring and auditing:
  5. Responding appropriately to detected offenses and developing corrective action;
  6. Developing open lines of communication; and
  7. Enforcing disciplinary standards and rewards through well-publicized guidelines.

Who must participate?

All staff members for all Medicare Part C (Medicare HMO) participating providers are required to participate in Fraud, Waste & Abuse training and to provide proof of same as of 12/30/09.
